Health insurance in Tampa, with clear numbers

What people actually pay in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco, before and after the subsidy.

In Tampa I keep meeting people who saw a number online, decided it was impossible, and closed the page. Let's look at the real numbers for this area: what a plan costs before help, and what people actually end up paying after.

Those figures are before help

The numbers in the table are frightening, and that's why I include them: they're what you see if you go to HealthCare.gov without entering your income.

But in Florida over 95% of enrollees receive a subsidy, and the average premium actually paid statewide is around $106 a month. A third of enrollees pay less than $10.

The gap between the $932 in the table and what you'd pay depends entirely on your income and household size. It takes five minutes to work out, and it's free.

BayCare, HCA and why it matters which one you get

The Tampa Bay area is split between BayCare, with fifteen hospitals, and the west Florida division of HCA, with eighteen. Between them they cover practically the whole area.

The problem is they sit in different networks depending on the plan. If you live in Brandon and your go-to hospital is one of them, but the cheap plan only covers the other, that decision gets very expensive in an emergency.

Tell me which hospital you'd go to if something happened tonight and I'll tell you which plans cover it. That's the filter I use before looking at prices.

Don't auto-renew this year

For 2027 the increases in Florida range from 3.9% to 39.1% depending on the carrier. The plan that was good in 2026 may be the worst one next year.
