Omar Mendoza

Father of two and a licensed agent in six states. This is why I do this work.

Retrato de Omar Mendoza, agente de seguros de salud licenciado

I didn't come to insurance out of calling or for the business. I came because my family went through something I wouldn't wish on anyone, and because at the time we had no one to ask.

Why I do this

I came to this country more than twelve years ago. I'm a father of two, and I entered this industry for one specific reason: when my youngest son got cancer, we found ourselves alone.

He's well today. But back then we had insurance and no one to explain how it worked. Our agent never showed up once — not a call, not the barest guidance on what the plan covered and what it didn't. In a system like this country's, not understanding your own coverage is brutally expensive. We lost almost everything we had.

What weighs on me most today, knowing what I know now, is that much of it could have been avoided. A supplemental plan — the kind that pays cash when a serious diagnosis or a long hospital stay arrives — would have changed our situation. No one ever told us they existed.

What I actually do for a living

Making sure no family loses what it built for not knowing what was within reach. Health insurance covers the treatment; what wipes out a family's savings is everything else.

That's why I do this work, and why I do it this way: I answer the phone, I explain what's covered and what isn't before you sign, and I tell you when a supplemental plan makes sense and when it doesn't. I want to be for your family the agent mine never had.

I've spent the last few years learning this industry from the inside: the rules, the subsidies, the networks, the fine print. Not because I love bureaucracy, but because I know first-hand what it costs not to understand it.

My license, and how to verify it

I'm a licensed insurance agent. My national producer number is NPN 21726482, and you can check it yourself in the public registry of the National Insurance Producer Registry. You don't have to take my word for it.

I put it up front because in this business it's always worth asking. An agent who won't give you their NPN is an agent to walk away from.

How I can help you

What I don't do

I don't charge you to enroll: Marketplace enrollment is always free, and the carrier pays me. I don't give you a price before looking at your income, because it would be made up. And I don't switch your plan without telling you.

Why I write what I write

In the blog I explain rule changes as they come out, with the official sources linked in every article. It isn't filler: most of the problems that reach me come from outdated information someone read two years ago.

When a rule is being fought over in court — and right now several are — I say so plainly, instead of asserting something that could change next month.
