How to enroll in Obamacare step by step

With this year's dates, what to have on hand, and the slip-ups that force you to start over.

Enrolling isn't hard. What costs you is getting the date wrong, or starting without your paperwork and leaving it half done. Here's this year's calendar, the list of what you need, and the order of the steps.

The dates that matter

Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs from 1 de noviembre de 2026 al 15 de enero de 2027. But inside that window there's one date that decides when your coverage starts:

If you enrollYour coverage starts
November 1 to December 151 de enero de 2027
From December 16 to January 151 de febrero de 2027

If you live in Georgia, the marketplace is Georgia Access, not HealthCare.gov. The dates are the same, but you can start browsing plans from 19 de octubre. En Florida se usa HealthCare.gov y todo abre el 1 de noviembre.

Un aviso sobre la fecha final. A 2025 rule cut enrollment short at December 15. A judge vacated it in June 2026, but an appeal is under way. In practice: treat December 15 as your deadline. If the deadline ends up running to January, you lose nothing; if the appeal succeeds and you waited, you're locked out for a whole year.

Ten esto a mano antes de empezar

Half the applications that get abandoned are because someone went to look for a document and never came back. Gather it first:

I have the full list and why each item is asked for in what documents you need to enroll.

The steps, in order

1
Create or recover your account. If you enrolled in a previous year, log into the same account instead of opening another. Two accounts for the same person create a mess that takes weeks to untangle.
2
Fill in the household application. Who lives with you, who's on your tax return and who wants coverage. Careful: your tax household isn't the same as who sleeps in the house.
3
Declare your estimated income. Next year's. If you're self-employed, it's after expenses.
4
Get your eligibility result. It tells you whether you qualify, how much help you get and whether anyone in the household goes to Medicaid or CHIP.
5
Compara planes de verdad. Not just the monthly payment: look at the deductible, the out-of-pocket maximum, whether your doctors are in network and whether your medications are on the list.
6
Enroll and pay the first premium. This step gets forgotten and it's the one that activates everything. Without the first payment you have no coverage, even if the application says you enrolled.

The slip-ups I see most

What if I miss the date?

Then you have to wait for the next enrollment period, unless you have a life event that opens a special period: losing your coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby or no longer qualifying for Medicaid, among others. I explain it in full in special enrollment periods.

Would you rather do it with me?

I do this every day and it takes about 20 minutes. I check your income, compare the plans that actually suit you and make sure the first premium gets paid. It costs you nothing: the insurance company pays me.
